Lowering Glutamate | Ashwagandha

Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera)– Protects against glutamate.  Though most commonly known for aiding in adrenal fatigue, this mild herb is protective against glutamate.  We've been able to source it here and most commonly add it to our teas. Water extract from the leaves of Withania somnifera protect RA differentiated C6 and IMR-32 cells against glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. “ASH-WEX pre-treatment inhibited glutamate-induced cell death and was able to revert glutamate-induced changes in HSP70 to a large extent. Furthermore, the analysis on the neuronal plasticity marker NCAM (Neural cell adhesion molecule) and its polysialylated form, PSA-NCAM revealed that ASH-WEX has therapeutic potential for prevention [...]

Lowering Glutamate | Acorus Gramineus (Calamus Root aka Sweet Flag)

Acorus Gramineus (Calamus Root aka Sweet Flag) essential oil has shown to inhibit NMDA (glutamate) receptor activity, increase GABA and lower glutamate upon inhalation. We have been able to source this, here.  I will occasionally add this to our diffuser to help calm any crazy days. “These results demonstrated that EO extracted from AGR exhibited neuroprotective effects on cultured cortical neurons through the blockade of NMDA receptor activity, and that the glycine binding site appeared not to be the major site of action. ” http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0024320501009444   “Furthermore, inhalation impressively inhibited the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transaminase, [...]

Better, Not Perfect

I’ve decided that I am going to start a series of posts where I compare convenience foods and provide a better, but not perfect, replacement option. We all know that cooking every meal from scratch is the best, but I also understand that situations may come up where you don’t have the option and/or that some don’t want to make the commitment to REID but do want to improve their current diet. Because some of these foods are not completely REID approved, I will refrain from posting them to the REID Facebook group. However, I will [...]

Why Are More Males Affected With Autism?

While there are many theories on this, I found the glutamate and immune activation connection to be the most interesting. Often you will hear children with autism have experienced some sort of trauma (prematurity, stroke, etc.) or substantial changes to immune function, leading to immune activation (vaccines, illness, and it is now linked that mothers immune activation can trigger immune activation within the fetus, and so on) that parents believe may have triggered or caused their autism. Both trauma and immune activation cause an increase in glutamate.  “It was initially thought that autistic children had fewer glutamate [...]

Histamine Intolerance (Eczema, Allergies & MCAD)

This information is here to help support you if you struggle with histamine intolerance or mast cell activation. Not everyone will necessarily need to implement these changes. Early on, our son's eczema drastically increased while working with our integrative pediatrician on dietary changes and incorporating a handful of supplements (which we’ve since discontinued). What were once small little dime-sized rough spots on his skin grew into an angry head-to-toe rash covering most of his body.  Assuming it was something his skin was coming into contact with, I overhauled household items he was frequently exposed to – [...]

Phenols & Salicylates

This information is here to help support you if you struggle with phenol or salicylate intolerance. Not everyone will necessarily need to implement these changes. Phenols (salicylates are a type of phenol) are chemical compounds naturally found in foods. Typically the brighter/more colorful the food, the higher in phenols. Some Foods/Herbs Highest in Phenols & Salicylate Food coloring/dyes Apricots Dates Cherries Berries Bananas Soy Buckwheat Symptoms Associated with Phenols & Salicylate overly giggly red ears or flushed cheeks aggression defiance irritability night waking tics emotional dark circles under the eyes hyperactivity Testing Phenol Sulfotransferase Deficiency (PST) which [...]

Oxalates

This information is here to help support you if you struggle with an oxalate intolerance. Not everyone will necessarily need to implement these changes. Oxalate (Oxalic Acid) is a molecule widely found in plants but can also be found in the human body- either as a result of dietary sources or endogenous production.  Like glutamate, and when in excess, oxalates can be problematic and contribute to a long list of health issues. Some Foods/Herbs Highest in Oxalate Parsley Sorrel Lambs Quarters Spinach Rhubarb Beets Potatoes (including chips/french fries) Nuts (including nut butters & many grain-free flours) Okra [...]

A Story of Hope with REID: Overcoming Apraxia

We occasionally get letters or comments from parents that have seen improvements in health with REID. To help provide hope to so many still in the trenches, I’ve decided to make more of an effort to share some these comments (with their permission, of course). Many of us don’t have it all figured out, but we cling to the hope and words of progress. Everyone’s journey is different, diet changes may not reap huge changes for all, but it is absolutely helping some. Like this family, glutamate and the REID diet have been a huge piece to [...]
