Smothered Apple Bowl

It is not uncommon for many families to struggle with egg allergies or egg sensitivities.  Because of this, finding easy and tolerated breakfast options can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, a few years ago one of our incredible admins from the FB group, Leslie, shared this simple and versatile breakfast/snack idea. This recipe has been a staple in our house ever since. Thank you, Leslie! […]

Basil & Berry Smoothie

This simple smoothie works for a quick an easy breakfast, afternoon snack, or even a popsicle.   I will say that it is not very sweet, so if you’re just incorporating smoothies and are looking for a sweeter option, you may want to add a little unfiltered clean apple juice to make it a little more palatable.  I wouldn’t go overboard with the juice as it is a free sugar and can also contribute to yeast, imbalances, etc. This recipe can easily be modified to be used as a base for a smoothie bowl.  If doing so, you [...]

Breakfast Cookies (GF, EF, DF, SF)

A few years ago one of our incredible Facebook group members, Wendy, shared a version of this recipe.  After seeing her post, I quickly got into the kitchen (because who wouldn’t want a cookie for breakfast) and they were an immediate hit. While I do not know the origin of the original recipe, we’ve adjusted it to fit our needs over time.  While this recipe is gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, casein-free, soy-free, etc. you may want to be cautious overdoing it with nuts as they are high in oxalate, contribute to constipation, etc.  This recipe is very forgiving [...]

Mom’s Monday Morning Breakfast Shake

Did you know that protein powders are a source of free glutamate aka MSG? We avoid them like the plague. However, if you’re interested in adding a little more protein to your smoothie/shake toss in some hemp seeds.  This shake is a treat and should actually be called some sorta latte cappa-thing. […]

Valentine Antioxidant Drink

We sometimes struggle with how to make the food-centered holidays fun, but this simple drink makes for a fun way to celebrate “Valentime’s Day” (as our son called it).  “Coconut water contains varying levels of antioxidants that can make it turn pink. The variation is natural and is just as delicious as the clear water so we embrace it. Enjoy” -Harmless Harvest […]

Lowering Glutamate | Cistus

Cistus Tea Our family LOVES to hike and can often be found wandering in the woods during most of the summer.  After a bullseye rash and Lyme scare a few years ago after hiking in the Swiss Alps, I started incorporating the herb Cistus before hiking as it is known to repel ticks as they do not like the smell of Cistus.  This mild and sweet-tasting herb was an easy addition to our herbal teas but it wasn’t until a few years ago, that I discovered the true benefits of this incredible herb. Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt has wildly [...]

Managing Birthdays

While birthdays and birthday parties may seem overwhelming and daunting while on a low glutamate diet, don't let them be. Here are some of the ways we have celebrated our little guys' special day while keeping it clean for him and also accommodating others. Cake:  We always stick with a modified paleo type birthday cake or cupcake and use fun toys, candles, fruit, flowers, crumbled dried fruit, and decorative items to keep them fun and exciting for the kids.  Naturally colored/dyed shredded coconut or quinoa can also help create a cleaner natural sprinkle.  When dealing with [...]

Pineapple Cherry Green Smoothie

Another smoothie combination, thrown together for an easy breakfast or lunch! Ratios can be adjusted based on the amount of fruit tolerated and/or fresh stevia leaf (we bought our plant from Lowes) may be incorporated if you’re really scaling back on fruit.    This quick option helps us to meet our goal of getting at least one green vegetable in at every meal! Serves 2 Ingredients 4 c. Organic Kale (packed) 1-1 oz. shot Organic Wheatgrass (we buy these in the frozen section of Whole Foods) 1 1/4 c. Frozen Organic Cherries (we buy these from Costco) [...]

Thoughts on the Glutamate Autism Connection

After following diet changes and doing some research, I started to get a better understanding of the role of excess glutamate in many health issues.  There is a huge connection between excess glutamate and autism.  In my opinion, dietary sources of free glutamate in addition to intrinsic glutamate or glutamate signaling produced by the body, play a much bigger role in health issues than we realize. Due to the number of glutamate receptors throughout the brain and its regulation of over 50% of our nervous system, I personally believe excess glutamate is a central mechanism behind the [...]

Incorporating Herbs

In my opinion, immune dysfunction due to underlying infections and imbalances is one of the most prominent reasons for elevated glutamate levels.  Herbs are used to help combat underlying infections, intestinal overgrowth, and pathogens, calm microglial activation, and restore proper gut and neurological function. Many families start with culinary herbs, slowly work to incorporate healing herbal teas, and build up from there (powders, tinctures, etc) based on their individual needs. We've personally found the most benefit from herbs by introducing one at a time, going low and slow (you don't want to induce the cell danger response [...]
