Collard Greens

Growing up I became accustomed to the standard soggy collards- swimming in swampy water with nearly a cup full of white sugar dumped in to disguise the bitterness of the greens.  It wasn’t until recently that we changed up our collard green recipe to this lighter healthier option that I keep going back to.  We will never go back to the old soggy stewed collards. Thai Vegetable Coconut Rice

Looking for a delicious Meatless-Monday meal?  I’ve found it! One of my closest friends (and if I’m being honest, more like my therapist), Maggie sent this, Host the Toast recipe to me a year ago and we’ve been making it ever since. My whole family LOVES this recipe and it is a great way to sneak in some extra vegetables, especially if you’re trying to cut back on meat.  The recipe below has been modified from the Host the Tost original recipe to keep it lower in glutamate. I subbed lime juice for the vinegar, used clean [...]

Creamy Tomato Spaghetti Squash with Italian Sausage

In need of a simple weeknight meal that puts a spin on your traditional spaghetti?  While it may sound odd, adding a few cashews to this tomato sauce gives it a creamy and bold flavor that balances out the squash well.  While I understand many avoid using pork, other ground meat may be used instead. The recipe can also very easily be adjusted to be vegan. […]

Smothered Apple Bowl

It is not uncommon for many families to struggle with egg allergies or egg sensitivities.  Because of this, finding easy and tolerated breakfast options can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, a few years ago one of our incredible admins from the FB group, Leslie, shared this simple and versatile breakfast/snack idea. This recipe has been a staple in our house ever since. Thank you, Leslie! […]

Mom’s Monday Morning Breakfast Shake

Did you know that protein powders are a source of free glutamate aka MSG? We avoid them like the plague. However, if you’re interested in adding a little more protein to your smoothie/shake toss in some hemp seeds.  This shake is a treat and should actually be called some sorta latte cappa-thing. […]

Valentine Antioxidant Drink

We sometimes struggle with how to make the food-centered holidays fun, but this simple drink makes for a fun way to celebrate “Valentime’s Day” (as our son called it).  “Coconut water contains varying levels of antioxidants that can make it turn pink. The variation is natural and is just as delicious as the clear water so we embrace it. Enjoy” -Harmless Harvest […]

Managing Birthdays

While birthdays and birthday parties may seem overwhelming and daunting while on a low glutamate diet, don't let them be. Here are some of the ways we have celebrated our little guys' special day while keeping it clean for him and also accommodating others. Cake:  We always stick with a modified paleo type birthday cake or cupcake and use fun toys, candles, fruit, flowers, crumbled dried fruit, and decorative items to keep them fun and exciting for the kids.  Naturally colored/dyed shredded coconut or quinoa can also help create a cleaner natural sprinkle.  When dealing with [...]

Anti-Aging Face Oil

I’ve often struggled with dry skin and have always on the hunt for good moisturizing products. Unfortunately, the best products are often crazy expensive and contain a ton of unwanted ingredients, specifically those free containing glutamate.  I always get a little worried about using those products, not only because of my own health, but more specifically because of any reactions they may cause my son from kissing my face.  Because of this, I set off to make my own nourishing and anti-aging moisturizer.  I will add a drop or two of this to my face before [...]

Salted Caramel Sauce

1/3 c. coconut sugar 1 c. full fat coconut milk (homemade or this) 1/4 tsp. sea salt Place all ingredients in pot over stovetop.  Bring heat and ingredients to boil. Once boiling, stir frequently and drop heat to medium.  Continue stirring and allow for ingredients to a medium boil for 11-14 minutes.  Remove from heat and allow to slightly cool before storing. Refrigerate and store in an airtight container. Sauce will thicken as it cools. Note: This is a rare treat for us as we try to extremely limit refined sugar bc of the inflammatory properties and [...]

Mango Salad Dressing

This simple salad dressing is a light and refreshing option for a summer salad!  The mango flavor pairs well with many grilled proteins, avocado and is a delicious topping for grilled pork, salmon or chicken kabobs.  Not to mention, mango and red onion are fantastic sources of quercetin, which inhibits glutamate release and a natural mast-cell stabilizer. Ingredients 1 large fresh mango 1/2-1″ piece of fresh ginger 1 tbsp chopped red onion 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes 1/4 c. fresh cilantro (packed) 1/4 c. avocado oil 1/2 tsp. sea salt 1 tbsp fresh orange juice Instructions [...]
